Yamileth Garcia Cano
Happy birthday to Mexico’s Yamileth García Cano, Jalisco’s sprintin phenom who’s already inside the national top five in two separate events.
Yamileth’s 18.45 over 150m ranks her fourth on Mexico’s Sub-16 list, and her 40.56 over 300m ranks her fifth. Those two distances sit on either side of the hardest divide in sprinting. The 150m is decided by raw acceleration and top-end speed. The 300m is decided by what an athlete can still produce after her body has started asking her to stop. Being top five nationally in both, at 14, means the range is real rather than the product of one good afternoon.
She also throws the discus, which makes her more interesting still. Sprinting and throwing draw on the same explosive qualities from opposite ends of the sport, and athletes who genuinely do both are rarer than you would think. Most young sprinters never pick up an implement, and most young throwers never learn what a fast 300m feels like. Yamileth has done both while still in the Sub-16 category.
She has years of Sub-16 and Sub-18 competition still in front of her, and the two hardest things to teach are already there: real top-end speed, and the willingness to walk into an event nobody expected her to enter. Everything else is time and repetition.
¡Feliz cumpleaños, Yamileth! Que te canten Las Mañanitas bien temprano, y que este año te traiga mucha salud, mucha alegría y muchos metros más. 🎂🎁🎉🫶🫶🇲🇽
