Happy birthday to Vietnam’s 800m runner Vũ Thị Trà My, whose trophy cabinet is already worth describing at length.

At the 2025 National Youth Championships in Đà Nẵng, Trà My won three gold medals: the individual 800m, the mixed 4x800m relay and the women’s 4x400m relay. Ninh Bình province topped the entire national team standings that week with eight golds, and she personally accounted for three of them. One athlete delivering more than a third of a province’s championship haul is the kind of week that gets remembered locally for years.

She had already won the 800m at the ASEAN Schools Games in Đà Nẵng the year before, and this June she was one of only eight athletes selected to represent Vietnam at the Asian U20 Championships in Hong Kong, where she made the 800m final and finished fifth on the continent. She was also part of the Vietnamese mixed 4x400m squad that set a national U20 best in Dubai. Finalist in Asia, national youth champion, ASEAN Schools champion — and she is only now leaving the junior ranks. Vietnamese athletics has named her among the athletes it is building its next decade around, and on this evidence that looks like a good call.
