Szonja Keszthelyi

Happy monumental birthday to Hungary’s Szonja Keszthelyi, a one-lap specialist closing out her junior years in the events that reveal character faster than any others: the 400 metres and the 4×400 relay. The 400 is famously the race that cannot be faked: too long to sprint on talent alone, too short to hide in the pack, and the athletes drawn to it young tend to be the ones with an old-school toughness about them.

Hungary’s relay tradition gives its young quarter-milers something precious: a team to grow up inside. Szonja has been developing exactly there, where every training rep serves both her own lane and three teammates’ trust.

Eighteen today, with the junior chapter closing and the open 400 waiting. She’s built for it.
