Sophia Beckmon

Happy birthday to the USA’s long jumper Sophia Beckmon, the reigning NCAA indoor national champion and the first field-event national champion in the history of the University of Illinois.

In March, Sophia jumped 6.84m and won the NCAA Division I Indoor Championship. Illinois has been running a track programme for well over a century and had never produced a national champion in a field event until she did it. She led the NCAA long jump for the entire indoor season and won the Big Ten indoor title at 6.77m on the way.

Her personal best is **6.86m**, and it is not just a school record. It equals the **American U20 record**, and she set it as a freshman in May 2024. That mark also carried the Olympic standard. She has been a first-team or All-America selection four times across indoors and outdoors, and she is a six-time NCAA Championships qualifier.

The international record started earlier and higher than most. At the World U20 Championships in Lima in 2024 she jumped 6.54m for the **silver medal**, and it was the first medal the United States won at those championships. Before that she was NACAC U23 champion at 6.69m. And before any of it she was a high schooler in Oregon City, Oregon, jumping 6.80m — the second-farthest long jump by an American high school girl in history, one inch off the national record.

The long jump gives an athlete six attempts, a board she must hit within a few centimetres at full sprint, and no partial credit. Everything that matters happens in about four strides and is over before the crowd has finished looking up. Sophia has been getting it right, at the highest level American college athletics has, since she was seventeen.
