Niki Bisova

Happy birthday to Czechia’s middle-distance runner and 400m sprinter Niki Bisova, who ran a European Championships relay leg for her country a little over a week ago.

At the European Championships in Birmingham on 14 August, Niki took the third leg of the Czech women’s 4x400m and split 53.1 — and the Czech team moved up a place while the stick was in her hand. That is the whole job of a third leg, and she did it on the biggest stage on the continent. Earlier in the season she ran the second leg at the World Relays in Gaborone, where the Czech quartet came through their heat in 3:25.42 and booked their country a place at the 2027 World Championships in Beijing, then finished seventh in the final.

The bigger story of her 2026 is one you have to look at the whole profile to see. She set a personal best in every single event she contests this year. The 800m came down to 2:02.82 in Poznań in June, taking almost a full second off her old mark and putting her under 2:03 for the first time in her career. The flat 400m went to 53.31 in Prague. Indoors she improved over both 800m and 400m as well. Athletes have breakthrough races all the time; having a breakthrough in every event at once, at twenty-three, is a different kind of season and it usually signals the training has clicked.

She came out of Ústí nad Labem, where the local press were calling her an athletics supertalent while she was still at school, and she was a Czech champion at eighteen. She has represented Czechia at both the European and World Junior Championships, and she is studying physical therapy alongside all of it — which is a useful thing to understand deeply when your event punishes you for a full lap and then asks you to do it again.
