Miriam Sánchez

Happy birthday to Mexico’s sprinter Miriam Sánchez, a double national champion, a World Championships semi-finalist, and the fastest Sub-23 woman her country has produced.

Miriam won both the 100m and the 200m at the Mexican Championships, running 11.18 and 22.60 to do it. She took silver over 200m at the NACAC Championships in the Bahamas. And she reached the 200m semi-finals at the World Championships in Tokyo, which is the kind of sentence Mexican sprinting does not often get to write. She holds Mexican U23 records over both 100m and 200m and the U20 record over 100m on top of them.

This May she closed out her Olimpiada Nacional career in the loudest way available. In Guadalajara she won the Sub-23 100m in 11.38 and set a new Olimpiada Nacional record, her third consecutive title over the distance, then won the 200m as well and added two relay silvers. Four medals and a record at her final one. In July she was back in the top five at the NACAC U23 Championships on home soil in Tlaxcala.

She is a poblana, from Puebla — the city a bishop dreamt of in 1530, laid out on the valley floor by angels, which is a reasonable origin story for somebody who runs the way she does. She trains with the Aztecas of UDLAP under Pedro Tani while studying Nutrition Science with a 9.6 average, and she was awarded Puebla’s Premio Estatal del Deporte. Her stated destination is Los Angeles in 2028.
