Happy monumental birthday to Italy’s young sprinter Michela Pierantoni, who crosses out of the U18 ranks today — in Italian terms, from the allieve category into the juniores — with her speed still compounding. Michela races the pure sprints — 60, 100, 200 — the events where Italian athletics has built its modern golden age, from Olympic relay gold to world-class depth in every category. Coming up as a sprinter in that environment means iron competition at every national meet, and iron competition is the best gift a developing athlete can receive.

And she crosses over with a breakout season already in hand: this past indoor campaign she lowered her 60m best to 7.59, and just last month she cracked a new 100m personal best of 11.90 — PBs indoors and out in the same year, exactly the trajectory an athlete wants to carry into a new category. The clocks are moving one direction for Michela, and it’s the right one.
