Happy birthday to Mexico’s shot putter Melanie Duron, and throwers deserve to hear this far more often than they do, so let us be plain about it: 18.21 metres is a seriously big throw.

Melanie set that shot put best in February 2025 and it has her ranked 73rd in the world. She throws the hammer too, with a best of 46.41m set at Texas State’s own Bobcat Track and Field Complex, and she has won back-to-back Sun Belt indoor titles for the Bobcats. Her university paper wrote up the season that produced the 18.21m under a headline crediting a new technique for a historic year, which is exactly what throwers spend entire winters chasing and hardly ever get to see arrive all at once.

The story underneath it is the best part. Melanie is from Laredo, Texas, right on the Rio Grande, and she came up as an all-state thrower at Martin High School. In June 2025 World Athletics cleared her to represent Mexico, having previously competed for the United States. The two flags in her bio are not decoration. They are a border city, a formal change of allegiance, and a decision with a date on it.
