Laura Mcshane
Happy birthday to Australia’s Tasmanian sprint standard-bearer Laura McShane, a 52-second 400m runner from the state that has to travel further than anyone else in the country just to reach a start line.
Laura’s 52.75 over one lap puts her squarely in the national conversation, and she backs it with genuine range — in the same season she has ranked among Australia’s best over 200m and over 100m as well, which is a much rarer trick than it sounds. The detail that tells you the most about her, though, is the Tasmanian state record over 200m. State records in Australia get chased hard by everybody, every summer. Hers has stayed hers.
The 400m is the event that finds out anyone who is only fast or only tough, because it demands both at once and then asks for more in the last eighty metres. Laura has raced the whole spectrum around it, from the flat-out 100m to the relay leg where a team’s entire day rests on your split, and she has done all of it while carrying Tasmania’s flag into rooms full of athletes from programmes ten times the size.
Happy birthday, Laura! Wishing you a cracking year ahead, a summer of legal winds and clean lanes, and fairy bread on the table. You beauty! 🎂🎁🎉🫶🫶🇦🇺
