Hukmova Jonbibi

Happy birthday to Uzbekistan’s sprinter Jonbibi Hukmova, who is having the kind of year that rearranges what a country expects from itself.

In July, at the inaugural Asian U23 Championships in Ordos, Jonbibi won the 400m in 51.19, a lifetime best, and then went back out and won the 800m as well. Two continental titles in one week, in two events that ask for opposite things. Five months before that she had taken the Asian indoor 400m title in Tianjin in 53.61, and in 2025 she claimed the 400m bronze at the Asian Championships in Gumi. Her bio also carries the Asian U20 title from Dubai and the rank of International Master of Sport, and she has been part of an Uzbek mixed 4x400m national record.

She is a sprinter first. The 400m is where her speed lives and where the 51.19 came from, and the 800m is the extra range she has decided to go and take. Very few athletes anywhere can hold both ends of that at once.

Jonbibi comes from Qashqadaryo, the province that holds Shahrisabz, birthplace of Amir Timur and the ruins of his Ak-Saray palace. A woman from Timur’s own province conquering two Asian titles inside a single week is a sentence that writes itself.
