Happy birthday to Indian middle-distance royalty Harmilan Bains — they don’t call her “The Queen” for nothing. At the Asian Games in Hangzhou, Harmilan took silver in the 1500m — ending India’s 41-year wait for a women’s podium in the event — and then, days later, added 800m silver for one of the great doubles in Indian athletics history. Her 4:05.39 from 2021 rewrote the Indian 1500m record books, and this summer she’s begun a new chapter entirely: back on the track after injury, she stepped up to the 10,000m for the first time in her life in Pune — and promptly took a podium in her debut at the distance.

The lineage makes it richer: her mother, Madhuri Singh, won Asian Games 800m silver in Busan in 2002. Mother and daughter, both Asian Games medalists, two decades apart — Indian running heritage flowing through one family. Harmilan hasn’t just continued the story; she’s outrun it, eclipsing even her mother’s 1500m best along the way.
