Claudia Mir

Happy birthday to Spain’s Clàudia Mir, a 400m hurdler for Club Atletisme Tarragona and one of the athletes who just carried her club back into Spain’s top division.

Clàudia’s 2026 has been built around the team. On 3 May at Granollers she ran 1:06.00 over the 400m hurdles and was part of a winning 4x400m in 3:58.53. At the end of the month she was in Burgos for the Spanish Clubs promotion final, entered in both the 400m and the 400m hurdles, where the CA Tarragona women won promotion to the first division. On 4 July she went to Girona for the 106th Campionat de Catalunya Absolut and ran 1:05.99 over the hurdles, a club record. A year earlier she had taken bronze in the same event at the Spanish Clubs Final A in Valladolid in 1:04.83, and she owns a 57.93 indoor 400m from the Catalan U23 championships in Sabadell.

Club athletics in Spain is a genuinely different sport from the individual circuit. Promotion and relegation are decided by whether a squad’s fourth and fifth scorers turn up, which means the athletes who matter most are the ones who will run three events in a weekend and hurt themselves in all of them. Clàudia’s name sits on three CA Tarragona club records, including the 4x400m and the mixed 4x400m. That is the profile of an athlete a club builds around.
