Cierra Jackson

Happy birthday to the USA’s discus thrower Cierra Jackson, the Diamond League record holder, currently ranked third in the world, and the author of the single most spectacular throw of the 2026 season.

London, 18 July, final attempt of the competition. Cierra had already been throwing for an hour. She stepped into the circle and sent the discus 71.72 metres — a Diamond League record, a meeting record, and a personal best by very nearly four metres. Four metres. Throwers spend whole careers hunting forty centimetres. It made her the second American woman in history past 71 metres, and she beat a field that included the reigning world champion and two of the best throwers Europe has. Her words afterwards were as plain as the throw: “Obviously it means the world to me because I’ve worked so hard.”

Eight days later she took silver at the US Championships in New York with 67.40m, so this is not a one-afternoon story. It is the top of a curve that has been climbing hard since college, where she won the 2025 NCAA outdoor discus title with 65.82m on her first attempt — a championship record, and the first outdoor national title in Fresno State history. At the same championships she placed eighth in the shot put, making her the first Bulldog ever to earn two first-team All-America honours at a single meet. She holds the Mountain West discus record and has thrown 17.77m in the shot and 65.89m in the hammer for good measure.

Throwers get a fraction of the attention sprinters get for a great deal more work. Cierra just threw further than any woman in the history of the Diamond League.
