Vivien Mejia

Happy birthday to El Salvador’s heptathlete Vivien Mejía, a Central American champion who won her first international title at fourteen years old.

June 2025, at the Estadio Jorge Mágico González in San Salvador, in front of a home crowd: Vivien won the Central American U18 heptathlon with 3,872 points. She was fourteen, competing in the U18 age group, and she won five of the seven events inside it — the hurdles, the high jump, the shot, the long jump and the javelin. Then this May in Managua she took silver at the Central American U18 Championships, and she led the entire field through the first three disciplines, setting personal bests in both the 100m hurdles and the shot put on the way. In July she was in Tlaxcala for the NACAC U18 Championships and threw a personal best in the javelin there too.

Four of her eight personal bests have been set this year. In a seven-event competition, that is the number that matters most, because a heptathlon score is only ever as good as its weakest discipline — and hers are all rising at once.

The heptathlon is the hardest thing in athletics. Two days, seven events, four separate skill sets that actively contradict each other, and a scoring table that is completely unsentimental about how tired you are. Vivien has been doing it against older girls since she was fourteen and beating them. She arrives at 16 with the whole of her U18 career still in front of her, and El Salvador does not produce many combined-events athletes at all — which makes what she is building genuinely important, not just impressive.
