Katie Ruffener

Happy birthday to the USA’s sprint hurdler Katie Ruffener, who closed out a Big Ten career built on one of the least forgiving events in the sport.

Katie’s lifetime best over 60m hurdles is 8.56, and she ran it exactly where an athlete should run it: in the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Indianapolis, on the day the conference title was on the line. She opened the 2026 indoor season with 8.68 for second at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational in Louisville and made the final at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, then went outdoors in Tampa in March. Her flat-out 100m hurdles best stands at 13.83, she has run 13.76 with the wind behind her, and she has enough range to have gone under 1:05 for the 400m hurdles as well.

The story starts in Bucyrus, Ohio. In 2022 she won the Ohio Division III state titles in both the 100m and the 300m hurdles, and the 13.71 she ran for the shorter one was a Division III state record. She also placed third in the 100m and fifth in the long jump that afternoon, and her 30 points were 30 of Colonel Crawford’s 44. Their first girls’ team state championship since 1992 was, in the most literal accounting, mostly her.

Hurdling is the event where technique and courage are the same skill. Katie has spent seven years proving she has both, and Ohio State got the best of it.
