Polina Naumenko

Happy birthday to Ukraine’s middle-distance runner Polina Naumenko, who rewrote her own personal best twice inside a single calendar year.

In January 2025 Polina ran 2:13.92 for 800m indoors in Kyiv. Five months later, at the Arena SKIF in Lviv, she took it outdoors and ran 2:09.42. Two lifetime bests, indoor and outdoor, in the same twelve months, and the outdoor one took better than four seconds off what she had done in the winter. Over two laps, four seconds is not an improvement. It is a different athlete.

The 800m is the most honest event in athletics. It is too long to sprint and far too short to sit in, and it punishes anyone who gets the first lap wrong more brutally than any other distance. There is no tactical hiding place and no way to fake it. Runners who improve at it are runners whose training is genuinely working, because the event simply will not flatter you.

She has relay range too, with a 4x400m background both indoors and out, which is where the speed underneath the 800m comes from. Her own three words for what she does are the best summary anyone could write: run, train, enjoy. Coming from someone training seriously through everything Ukrainian sport has had to hold together these last few years, that last word carries real weight.
