Anastasya Vasina

Happy birthday to Russia’s distance runner Anastasya Vasina, who races both the road and the track out of Perm, and who describes her running, in her own words, as something she does for the soul.

Anastasya is a KMC in athletics, the rank that marks the step up from regional competition into the national picture, and she carries bests of 4:26 for 1500m and 16:49 for 5000m. That is a genuinely wide range. The 1500m rewards a runner who can change gears; the 5000m rewards one who refuses to. Being credible at both, on two different surfaces, is rarer than it sounds.

She is also a certified fitness trainer, which means the discipline does not switch off when the session ends. Runners who treat training as a body of knowledge rather than a set of instructions tend to have the longest and most interesting careers, and Anastasya has built hers on exactly that footing.
