GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: Happy birthday to the United States’ 400m sprinter Moriah Oliveira, who has a habit of doing her very best running on the biggest stage available to her.

Across a college career that took her from Miami to Oregon, Moriah built a 400m best of 51.76 — and she ran it at the NCAA Championships themselves. That detail tells you who she is. Plenty of athletes run their fastest at a quiet meet in March. She ran hers in the biggest week of the collegiate year. In the same season she added 23.19 over 200m and 52.88 indoors over the lap, both at the ACC Championships.

Oregon credits her with five ACC titles across the 400m and the 4x400m relay, plus three NCAA Championship qualifications. That relay record is worth pausing on, because a quarter-miler who keeps getting picked for the four-by-four is a quarter-miler her teammates trust with the baton when the meet is on the line.

From Fort Myers, Florida, through four years in the ACC, and on to a season at Hayward Field. That is a long way to travel on the strength of one lap of the track.
