Happy birthday to Sweden’s 400m hurdles breakout Tilde Bjerager, who has given herself the ultimate early birthday present: a place on Sweden’s team for next month’s European Championships. It caps a season in America that Swedish athletics has been buzzing about. Competing for Montana State, Tilde won the Big Sky title in May with a staggering 1.28-second personal-best demolition — 55.84, fifth on the Swedish all-time list — then trimmed it again to 55.82 two weeks later, adding a 3:31.36 relay leg the same day for good measure.

Her club page in Växjö lists a personal motto that explains everything: “älska mjölksyra” — love the lactic acid. That’s the 400 hurdles in three words, and it’s why the event chose her back. Now she comes home to race on Swedish soil and then pull on the national vest at a European Championships, selected to a squad assembled under head coach Kajsa Bergqvist — Swedish athletics royalty handing the next generation its chance.
