Happy monumental birthday to Argentine steeplechase talent Lucia Suarez, who closes out her U18 career with national hardware and opens her U20 chapter today. Last season Lucia climbed the podium at the Argentine U18 Championships in the 2000m steeplechase, backing up the 7:39.34 she ran in Mar del Plata — a mark that announced her as one of her country’s most promising young distance runners.

The steeplechase is arguably the most demanding event on the track: barriers that don’t fall when you hit them, a water pit waiting every lap, and no place to hide for two kilometers. Choosing that event as a teenager — and medaling in it nationally, wearing the Argentine selection — says everything about the competitor she’s becoming.

At 18, Lucia steps into the U20 ranks with a national medal, championship experience and years of barrier-hardened toughness already banked. The steeple rewards exactly one thing above all: refusing to stop. She’s proven she has that in her.
