Happy birthday to Portugal’s teenage throwing phenomenon Adarlene Binta of Sporting CP — who celebrates it as a European finalist. This very week, Adarlene stood in the shot put final at the European U18 Championships, finishing among the top eight in all of Europe while still just 15 years old. It caps a month that already belonged to her: national U18 shot put champion with a championship record 15.94m in Beja, national U18 discus champion two days later, and then — one week after that — the national U20 title too, beating throwers years older.

The credentials underneath are just as loud: Adarlene owns the Portuguese U18 national record in the shot.43m and was the best U16 shot putter her country has ever produced, at 14.78m. Throwers her age simply do not usually do this. She is not waiting her turn; she’s taking everyone else’s.

Sixteen today, with a European final already behind her and every record book in front of her. Sporting has a lioness.
