Sara Zabarino

Happy birthday to Italy’s Sara Zabarino, an Italian national champion currently ranked #199 in the world in the javelin.

Sara owns a personal best of 58.62m and a top-8 finish at the World U20 Championships, with her national title sitting alongside both. A good deal of that was built in the United States, where she came through Florida State and then USC — two of the most demanding programmes in American college athletics, and a long way from home for a javelin thrower to travel in search of competition. The javelin gets a fraction of the attention the sprints do at any meet, which has never made much sense: it is the event where a whole body has to arrive at one instant in one line, and then the result flies away from the athlete before she can do a single thing more about it.
