Jazmin Romeu

Happy birthday to Spain’s sprinter Jazmin Romeu, who has had the kind of summer a sprinter remembers for good.

Jazmin equalled her 100m personal best of 11.54 on 1 July, then three days later won the 100m at the 106th Campionat de Catalunya Absolut in Girona in 11.86, taking the senior Catalan title ahead of Noa Miguel and Cristina Cámara. The week before that she was in Logroño winning the mixed 4x100m for Catalonia at the Spanish Federations Championships, part of a Catalan side that took the overall title. Her caption afterwards ran to six words: no he pogut ser més feliç.

None of this is new ground for her. Jazmin was the Spanish U20 100m champion in 2024, winning in Castelló in 11.62, and carried that form to the World U20 Championships in Lima later the same summer. What makes the U20 title worth more than the medal is what came before it. She reached that season having worked back from a foot injury, and said afterwards the medal meant far more to her than gold usually does.

She started sprinting at six, after a friend of her sister watched her running on a beach and told her family the kid was fast. She now trains at the CAR de Sant Cugat under Ricardo Diéguez, races for CA Igualada, and studies psychology alongside all of it.
