Sofiya Valyaeva

Happy birthday to Russia’s Sofiya Valyaeva, an 800m runner who spent this July doing the thing middle-distance runners wait years for.

On 10 July in Smolensk, Sofiya ran 2:07.14 over 800m, lowering a personal best that had stood since 2023. That is the part of the sport nobody puts on a highlight reel: three seasons of work between one number and the next, with no guarantee at any point that the number will ever move again. She also owns a 4:23.40 over 1500m from the Olympic Stadium in Cheboksary, and she carries the Russian classification of Candidate Master of Sport.

There is a second thing she does, and it is unusual enough to deserve the paragraph. Sofiya is a working sports photographer and social media specialist in Moscow, which makes her one of very few people in athletics who both competes in the sport and shoots it. Athletes see one side of a race and photographers see the other. She has spent years learning to be in both places, and the eye it takes to know when to press the shutter at a track meet is not far off the eye it takes to know when to move in an 800m.

Originally from Yaroslavl, now based in Moscow, and running the fastest 800m of her life three weeks before her birthday.
