Happy birthday to Spain’s sprint hurdler Laia Olmedo, who does her work for one of Catalonia’s established clubs in one of athletics’ least forgiving events.

Laia took the silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the Campionat de Catalunya Sub-23 in El Vendrell, racing for Avinent Manresa CAMB, the Bages club backed by the Catalan dental implant manufacturer Avinent.

The sprint hurdles are where the sport hides its real technicians. Ten barriers inside a hundred metres means the race is settled less by top speed than by whether a hurdler can hold her rhythm at full pace with something solid arriving every eight and a half metres. Three strides between hurdles, no room to adjust, and the whole thing over in a shade more than fourteen seconds. It punishes hesitation harder than any other event on the track, and it takes years of repetition before an athlete stops thinking about the barriers and simply runs at them.

Athletes who stay in the hurdles are a specific kind of person. Sprinters can move up or down a distance when things get difficult. A hurdler has one event, one rhythm, and one set of ten obstacles that do not move, and she goes back to the same problem week after week until she solves it. Laia has spent her Catalan career doing exactly that.
