Happy birthday to Australia’s Natalie Rule, who won the Gold Coast 10km three weeks ago as the fastest woman in the field, and then went out and delivered exactly that.

On 4 July at the Gold Coast, Natalie took the Southern Cross University 10km title in 32:57, seven seconds clear. The race organisers’ own write-up called it a commanding performance from the fastest entrant on paper. Nine days later she was on the grass at Bundoora taking second at the Victorian Cross Country Championships, and back in May she was the top seed in the elite mile at the Leonora Golden Gift out in the Western Australian goldfields. Road, grass and track, all inside one winter.

She has the range to do that because she has the marks in all of them. A 4:09.13 for 1500m, 8:51.06 for 3000m, 15:03.48 for 5000m, 32:46 for 10km on the road and 1:11:24 for the half marathon. There are not many distance runners anywhere who can turn up credibly at both ends of that spread. She has worn the Australian vest at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and at the World Championships in Eugene, she won the Nagoya Half Marathon, and she took the silver medal at the Australian half marathon championships.

She trains under Craig Mottram, which is a detail worth pausing on. Mottram is a World Championship 5000m bronze medallist and a three-time Olympian, the man who spent a decade being the fastest non-African distance runner on earth, and he now spends his time putting Australians like Natalie into the same races. She races for Sandringham in Melbourne and holds a health sciences degree from Deakin.

Happy birthday, Natalie! and winning national-standard road races three weeks ago. Good on ya, and here is to a big summer. 🎂🎁🎉🫶🫶🇦🇺
