Happy birthday to Scotland’s Rachel Callan, whose 400m hurdles personal best is exactly one minute flat.
1:00.00, at Grangemouth in August 2025. One hundredth of a second from the barrier that every 400m hurdler in the world spends years walking up to. There is no more motivating number in athletics than that one, and there is nobody it belongs to more completely than an athlete who ran it and then went back to training.
Two weeks earlier she had reached the final of the 400m hurdles at the UK Athletics Championships at the Alexander Stadium. In 2026 she has been the Scottish season leader in the event, running 61.09 at Aberdeen in April, and she opened the year with 39.83 for 300m indoors at the Emirates Arena.
Her best weekend, though, was Grangemouth in 2022, and her own account of it is unbeatable. She went to the Scottish U20 Championships planning to focus on the 400m hurdles. She won it by one hundredth of a second. Then she won the 200m. Then on the Sunday she won the 100m in 12.53, and afterwards said she never thought for a minute she could win three events, and that Sunday was just a wee bonus. Three national titles in twenty-four hours from an athlete who came for one.
A year before that, at seventeen, she ran the third leg for Scotland at the Manchester International in a 4x400m that went 3:43.08 and broke a Scottish U20 record standing since 2000. She took 400m hurdles silver on the same night in a personal best. She has since worn the Scotland vest again to win the 400m hurdles at the U20 Welsh International, and run for GB Juniors at the Loughborough International.
She races for Giffnock North, is coached by Anne Stewart and Jackie Alexander, holds the Scottish Student Athletics 400m hurdles record for the University of Strathclyde, and is part of the Strathclyde quartet that owns a Scottish 4x200m club record.
