Storm Evans

Happy birthday to Wales’s discus thrower Storm Evans, who has added almost ten metres to her best in four seasons.

The numbers tell it on their own: 39.82m in 2023, 44.86m in 2024, 47.96m in 2025, and 49.76m in April this year. That last one is the Houston Christian University school record, thrown at the Carl Kight Invitational in Nacogdoches, Texas, and she broke the HCU record twice in the same season. She also put the shot 13.45m in Houston in April, another lifetime best, because she has never been a one-implement thrower.

Throwers do not usually improve like that. Sprinters find tenths, jumpers find centimetres, and discus throwers spend entire seasons hunting a single metre, because the event is decided by a chain of things that all have to happen in the right order in about a second and a half. Ten metres in four years is a technical rebuild that worked, repeatedly.

She has been doing it in two hemispheres. Storm came out of Queen Elizabeth High School in Carmarthen and Carmarthen and District Harriers, threw for Wales at the Loughborough International at sixteen against senior fields, and is on the Welsh Athletics National Development Programme. She now spends the NCAA season at Houston Christian in the Southland Conference, then comes home to west Wales in June to throw at the Welsh Championships, where in 2026 she reached 45.91m. Carmarthen Harriers regularly enter Storm, Dolly, Summer and Buddy Evans in the same throws competition, so the club’s throwing circle has an unmistakable house style, and her coach at home is Kevin Evans.
