Nora Buron

Happy birthday to Spain’s sprinter Nora Burón, who did her fastest running of the year on her own club’s track.

In January, at the Velódromo de Anoeta in San Sebastián, Nora ran 24.76 over 200m short track, a lifetime best, on the boards her club calls home. A year earlier at the same venue she had put together one of the better weekends a Basque sprinter can have: gold in the 60m and gold in the 200m at the Basque U23 Championships, plus a silver over 200m in the absolute category, against senior women, in a personal best of 24.80. Her club noted afterwards that the run had moved her to eighth on the Atlético San Sebastián all-time 200m list.

She has a 12.06 over 100m and a 7.75 over 60m indoors, and she races the División de Honor for Atlético San Sebastián in the Liga Iberdrola, where a sprinter is expected to turn out in the individual events and then run a relay leg on tired legs. She took a bronze in the 4x100m at Santander, and the club’s 46.06 at Soria is on her record too. In July she was in Cáceres for the Spanish U23 Championships, entered in the 200m and the relay.

The bit worth knowing is where she came from. Nora grew up in Zornotza, Amorebieta-Etxano in Bizkaia, and came up through the small local club there before moving across to Gipuzkoa and one of Spain’s top-flight programmes. Basque local press covered it exactly as it deserved: a Zornotza girl going to the elite of Spanish athletics.
