Molly Hudson
Happy birthday to Great Britain’s Molly Hudson, who has taken six seconds off her 800m and thirty-four off her 1500m in about a year.
Those numbers are not typos. In 2025 Molly’s 800m best was 2:08.95 and her 1500m best was 4:41.03. This year she has run **2:02.84** and **4:07.27**. In February she took the silver medal over 1500m at the British Indoor Championships in Birmingham, behind Jemma Reekie. In January she ran 4:10.02 indoors, a Derby AC club record. She won the 1500m A race at the Loughborough BMC in 4:09. And on 4 July at the Pursuit 5000 in Stirling, a World Athletics Challenger meeting, she **won** the invitational 800m in 2:02.84, a personal best.
What she did to get there was give something up. Molly went to Boston College in the United States on the standard route British middle-distance runners take, and then came home, settled into forty to forty-five miles a week, and called it the sweet spot. She is entirely unromantic about it. Her line on the 1500m is simply that she can definitely run sub-4:10, and she has now done it repeatedly. She grew up in Uttoxeter, races for Derby AC, and trains in Loughborough. She grew up watching Jessica Ennis and Kelly Holmes.
The thing about an improvement curve that steep is that it is almost never talent arriving late. It is an athlete finally being in the right place, doing the right volume, with people who know what she needs. Molly found that, and the clock has not stopped moving since.
Happy birthday, Molly! Many happy returns of the day, and here is to that sub-four-ten. And so say all of us. 🎂🎁🎉🫶🫶🇬🇧
