Viky Kokrdova
Happy birthday to Czechia’s Viktorie Kokrdová, who set five personal bests in one season and won her first national medal doing it.
On 28 June at the Czech U20 Championships in Olomouc, Viky took bronze over 3000m in 10:15.65. It is the first national championship medal of her career. It came at the end of a season in which she rewrote almost everything she owns: 4:31.96 over 1500m at Plzeň in June, 9:58.30 over 3000m in Spain in May, 17:48.35 over 5000m in Poland in June, and new indoor bests over 1500m and 3000m at Ostrava in February. Five lifetime bests, one season, across four distances.
The Spanish trip is the one to sit with. In May, USK Praha took her to Castellón for the **European Champion Clubs Cup**, a senior competition between the best club teams on the continent, and she scored twice for them: ninth over 3000m, where the personal best came, and ninth over 1500m. She was eighteen, running for her club against senior European fields. In June she pulled on the Czech U20 vest at the six-nation international in Racibórz and finished fourth over 5000m.
She started at Atletik Rudná, a club in a town of about five thousand people west of Prague, where her younger sister Natálie also runs, and moved to USK Praha under Miroslav Semerád. Her entire Instagram bio is three running emoji, which is either the least self-promotional thing in this batch or the most efficient.
Distance running rewards the patient far more than it rewards the fast, and five personal bests in a season is what patience actually looks like from the outside.
Všechno nejlepší k narozeninám, Viky! Hodně štěstí, zdraví, lásky a ještě spoustu osobních rekordů. Na zdraví! 🎂🎁🎉🫶🫶🇨🇿
